Dining Room Buffet

April 21, 2012 By Mary

My original plan was to paint the dining room buffet blue.  I even bought Annie Sloan’s Aubusson Blue chalk paint, but after painting the built-in cupboard green I got nervous that another colorfully painted piece in the same room would be too much.  I love the green cabinet and I’m glad I took a chance with the color, but as much as I love me some color, I’m also scared to have too much.
I bought a 4 ounce sample pot of Annie Sloan’s French Linen.  I already had some Old White leftover from the chair project. I made a sample board and I fell in love with  the color that was equal parts French Linen and Old White (top of board) with clear wax.  I actually love making the sample boards, which really isn’t like me.  I usually want to jump right into a project, but the differences between one coat, two coats, washes and waxes are so completely different that I find it fun and interesting.  It’s like a science experiment.
The buffet was a creamy shade of white that had yellowed over the years and I wasn’t fond of the color, so one healthy coat of the French Linen/Old White mixture was perfect.  It has almost a pale lavender color, but it reads neutral/gray and is very pretty.

I found some really great knobs on sale at Anthropologie.  I love shopping their sales.  The knobs are an antique brass color in the shape of a tree stump with roots.  I was so excited that they had the five that I needed in the sale bin.  They were $2.95 each marked down from $10.00.  Score.  I’m pretty sure I was giggling with delight at the checkout.

A clear coat of wax and this buffet looks so much better.
I’ll be sharing some pictures of the whole room in my next post.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Your piece turned out beautifully. Doesn’t Anthro have the best knobs? I love to find them there because then a redo really does seem like something new.

It looks wonderful! (Saw it over on Coastal Charm’s party.) I love AS paint… recently experimented with mixing some Graphite and Old White together. Pure light gray result!
