Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Chair

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Chair

I’ve been wanting to try Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint, after seeing so many wonderful ways it can be used. I found this chair for $15 at a yard sale over the summer and thought it might be the perfect project for trying this paint.

Here is how the chair looked before.  It has nice details.  What you can’t see is that it was quite wobbly, so my dear husband helped me with this part and here is what it looked like ten minutes later.

After lots of epoxy, clamps, a few choice words and 24 hours of drying time this chair was ready for paint. I gave it two coats of Old White. The paint has extremeley low VOCs and almost no odor.  Another great thing about this paint is that you don’t have to prep the piece before painting.  I love that.  Here is what it looked like after two coats of paint.  It goes on thick and feels like, well, chalk.

I decided that I wanted it to look a little more “Old World”, so I sanded it in places.  To give it more of an aged look. I then mixed some Folkart Artists’ Pigment in Raw Umber with water.  Working in sections, I brushed it on and then immediately wiped it off with a cloth, so that it left only a little stain on the paint.

I then finish the piece off with some clear wax which I just brushed on lightly with a soft brush. After sanding  and waxing the paint has a smooth finish.  Here is a detail picture of the end result.

I covered the cushion with some windowpane wool fabric.  I love the contrast of the delicate carvings with the more masculine fabric.

Another detail view.

…and the full beauty shot.

This paint is expensive, $37 a quart, but very versatile and easy to use.

I love it in the Old White, Mary! What a difference from the before picture. I think it makes for a much prettier chair!

This chair is beautiful! You picked the perfect color, and I love the bit of distressing you did. The new paint totally brings out the details…you couldn’t see them as well before. REALLY great job!!

Just curious – why did you choose this particular chalk paint instead of redoing the chair by priming/painting in latex? I’m thinking about redoing a craft desk, and am wondering what sort of paint to use for a slick smooth finish.
