Guest Bedroom

May 21, 2012 By Mary

Welcome to the guest bedroom. This guest bedroom embodies the spirit of my decorating style – simple, light, fresh and airy with lots of texture and handmade items. Whenever I walk into this space I immediately feel relaxed and happy and that is how I hope our guests feel.

I wasn’t always like that. Here is a before of the same view. The room is small, and there wasn’t a comfortable place to put a queen size bed. It was squeezed against a small wall with no room for night stands. After seeing a few bedrooms with the bed against the window, I decided to give it a try. It works perfectly against the window wall. The room even feels bigger. I was amazed.

The curtains are stationary and hung on the outside of the window frame to make the window feel wide enough to act as a headboard. I added a shade for privacy and light control. The curtains are from the dining room in our last house. I really love them and I’m glad I found a place for them here. They are from Pottery Barn, but they unfortunately no longer carry them. The shade is from Target. It was $30.

I also had the matelasse coverlet from our last house. I love a matelasse coverlet. It can be dressed up or down with pillows, shams and quilts or blankets. They are easy to wash and always look nice.

Here is a before view from the same direction. The room looks bigger if that can be possible and there is plenty of room for nightstands now.

The shelf used to be green. It was actually the first thing that I painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, last fall before I had this blog, so there aren’t any before pictures. It is painted in Old White with a clear wax finish. We left it right were it was. It’s a convenient place to hang a hat, coat or towel. We moved the lights over to above the new nightstands. Wall lights work well in this space, because there isn’t a lot of room on the small nightstands.

Speaking of nightstands. This is the nightstand I found at a local shop for $18. It was pink, but I gave it a coat of Annie Sloan chalk paint in Arles with a dark wax finish. You can read about it here.

The tulip vase was made by wrapping lace around a can. Here is the link to that project.

Here is another before view (opposite the window wall).

I added some art that my son made in elementary school, and I like how the stripes in the artwork mimic the stripes on the rug. The rug is from Crate and Barrel from several years ago.  The artwork he brought home was on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch piece of paper, but I had it enlarged at a local print shop and then I framed it with a simple black frame. You can read about it here.

I have some books out for our “little” guests. The bottom two books are written by Robert McCloskey, who was a local author.

The Anthropologie Inspired pillow was easy to make and the directions are here. The hooked rug rooster pillow was made by a local artist. I love the texture and whimsy it adds.  The plaid pillows were bought on sale at Pottery Barn a few years ago. I don’t think they carry them anymore.

I thought about painting the walls a light gray color and even bought the paint, but the yellow paint grew on me after the curtains went up. Maybe I’ll use the paint in the kitchen.

I think we are ready for guests.

Great makeover, Mary! It’s amazing how just moving the bed underneath the window made such a big difference. I love your drapes! So glad you were able to reuse them here. I love them with the wall color.

Moving the bed….pure genius! I love that you created a focal point for the bed using the window and pretty drapes.

I also have a lamp on the wall with cord hanging down. I found a cord cover (light weight plastic) snapped it over the cord and painted it to match the wall color. It blends right in and you don’t even notice it when you enter the room.

    You’ve done a great job.

Hi there, just bopping around on BNOTP and came across your post. It peaked my interest because I plan on doing a guest room which is now an unused office. Your guest room turned out so pretty, I’d stay there in a heartbeat! Thanks for the inspiration!

This guest room is positively charming — it’s just so bright and cheery! Re-arranging the furniture was definitely the trick. I love the Pottery Barn curtains and the striped rugs from Crate and Barrel. I think the little wall lamps are just perfect for a cozy light to read by. I’d certainly enjoying being a guest in this pretty room! Thanks for sharing and have a good week. Visiting from Metamorphosis Monday. 🙂
